Triax Broadcast Series Transmission
grade 11mm triaxial camera cables
Van Damme transmission grade 11mm triax cables are available as
a solid conductor polyurethane (PUR) sheathed type for outside broadcast
runs, and a thermoplastic rubber jacketed stranded centre conductor type
for studio floor and patching applications. Both cable types will work
with the industry standard triax connectors such as Lemo and Fischer,
and in common with UK conventions they have a red outer sheath.
Materials
Van Damme uses silver plated ultra pure oxygen free copper for
the centre conductor of both the solid and stranded cables. The use of
oxygen free copper improves the conductivity of the cable. The additional
advantage of SPOFC is that silver is approximately 5% less resistive than
copper. High frequencies, which gravitate to the outside of the conductor
due to the skin effect, are conducted slightly more efficiently than the
lower frequencies that tend to saturate the UPOFC conductor. In addition
silver is less susceptible to corrosion than copper and so the plating
offers a protective barrier between the conductor and the insulation or
free air.
Foam skin polyethylene is used for the conductor insulation.
This special insulation is made up of individual pockets of inert gas
suspended in polyethylene, resulting in a low dielectric constant and
most importantly low capacitance. The skin refers to the outer layer of
the insulation, which forms during the extrusion process. This skin is
harder than the layer of insulation below it ensuring that the conductor
is well protected. The dielectric constant of foam skin polyethylene remains
stable over a wide frequency range. Other relevant properties include
good stress and temperature resistance.
The insulated conductor is screened with a 95% optical coverage
silver plated oxygen free copper braid- in practice this ‘screen’ is actually
the outer conductor for the camera signal. An additional layer of polyethylene
is placed over the first braid and the actual screen of the cable is applied
- again 95% optical coverage braided copper but tinned and not silver
plated. The solid type has an extruded outer jacket of polyurethane; an
extremely tough and anti-abrasion material ideal for the rigours of the
outside broadcast environment. The stranded variant has an outer jacket
of thermoplastic rubber (TPR). This material has excellent flexibility
characteristics combined with good tear and cut resistance.
Applications
• PUR sheathed cable with solid centre conductor for long transmission
lengths and hostile environments typically encountered in outside broadcasts
• TPR sheathed stranded centre conductor type for patching applications
and studio floor cameras
• Designed for industry standard 11mm triaxial camera connectors
• Can also be used for exceptionally long runs of serial digital video
with triax connector to BNC adaptors
